In the United Kingdom (UK), Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (2019) reported that 139 prisoners “currently living in, or presenting in, a gender different to their sex assigned at birth and who had sat a Local Transgender Case Board”. That is, these individuals have self-identified as some type of transgender identity to officials. This represented 1.6 transgender prisoners per 1,000 prisoners in custody. Around 35 percent of the 124 prisons in England and Wales reported at least one transgender prisoner. Most (N=111) presented their legal gender as male, and 23 as female; however, 114 identified as female and 19 as male (there were non-respondents). Attempts to obtain national-level estimates of the transgender prisoner populations in Canada and Australia were unsuccessful.
